2023 Halloween Costumes for Gun Owners

Lloyd Hanson (The Gray Man, 2022)

Lloyd Hanson has impeccable style and a personal look. And that look can be summed up in one word: Douchebag.

The Look:

Lloyd’s signature mustache and ever present extra-smedium shirt (to show off his guns) set the tone for his whole character and outfit. To copy this look, you have to get a polo in a size too small, get the not-quite pedo ‘stache, and a well fitted pair of slacks. Topping off the look is a pair of black bit loafers on bottom.

The Gun:

The gun to accompany such a flashy outfit is, surprisingly, a bone-stock Glock. If I was the prop guy I’d have given him an HK for that “I have money and you do not”-look, but I seem to have missed their casting email.

Thomas Magnum (Magnum P.I.)

I picked Thomas Magnum so I could put the Bren Ten in this list. Then I discovered that I had my 80’s tropical detectives mixed up, Magnum carried a Colt 1911. When I looked into what they wore on Miami Vice, I decided to stick with Mr. Magnum.

The Look:

The look isn’t complicated, but can go wrong pretty quickly. Up top is obviously the Hawaiian shirt with the top 3 buttons undone. Bright background, big print, under $20 at your local big box store, you should have 3 or 4 of these in your closet already. Pants can be either light colored slacks or medium-to-light wash denim, no darks here. The fit on the pants needs to be tight which makes carrying the gun, uh, challenging. The finishing touch is a Ferrari 308 GTS. You have one of those laying around, right?

The Gun:

A Colt 1911 A1, just as Tommy Mags carried in the military. Seven rounds of .45 ACP, and that’s only when he feels like carrying it. Because they all fall to hardball.

The Driver (Drive, 2011)

He’s literally me

The Look:

White or off-white henley shirt under a denim jacket under the statement piece of the whole film: the now-legendary scorpion bomber jacket. Normal dark-ish jeans, leather shoes (technically boots, but whatever), and a pair of driving gloves finish off the look. Not sure how they expect us to believe he wasn’t sweating buckets all the time. A jacket over a jacket, plus jeans & boots in Los Angeles? Man…

The Gun:

Surprisingly not a gun, but a wrench. Gosling’s character is a mechanic and driver, not a gunslinger.

Charlie Prince (3:10 to Yuma)

Charlie Prince is the #2 to Ben Wade in the movie, but his style (and definitely his guns) and #1 in my book. The actor apparently took on some serious firearms training in preparation for the role, and the gun handling reflects it. This role created and cemented in my mind the idea of a top-break revolver being awesome. I still want a pair of them to this day.

The Look:

Up top we start off with a sweet black cowboy hat, as befits a bad guy in a western. Some sort of white double-breasted overcoat, denim jeans, and rust-colored chaps, and large buttons throughout. Finished with fingerless gloves, this may be the hardest and most expensive outfit to replicate on the list. But man, does it look good. Don’t forget the beard either.

The Gun:

This character is defined in my mind by the pair of S&W Model 3 Schofield revolvers Mr. Price carries, and in the way he carries them. These guns are carried butt-forward, which makes almost no sense to me as a modern shooter. The rig they are carried in is also very unique, with the holsters being adorned with silvery studs that match the large buttons on the jacket and chaps. Honestly, I picked this character because of the guns alone.

Get recked, scrub

Conclusion

Just because you’re dressing up doesn’t mean you have to go unarmed. With careful outfit selection, a person can stay armed during this most spooky of seasons, whether you are incorporating a gun into their get up or just concealing their EDC into an unrelated costume.

Stay strapped, and we’ll see you next time.
