2020: A Year Finally in the Rearview

2020 is finally behind us. I think everything that can be said about 2020 has already been said elsewhere more eloquently than I could hope to match, so we’ll leave that aside. First I’ll recap how I did on my 2020 resolutions and then lay out my goals for 2021.

2020 Recap

#1. Shoot at least once a week: Up until about May I actually did very well on this one. I may not have made it every single week but I was shooting a lot. Unfortunately, leaving my part time job at Shooters World meant I lost access to free range time, and then The Great Ammo Scare happened and shooting basically stopped for me in 2020 sometime around mid June.

#2. Try to dryfire at least three times a week: In a word, no. To elaborate a bit, lol no. I did a little bit of dryfire through the first half of the year, but once it became clear I wasn’t going to be shooting matches anytime soon, my motivation to practice dropped waaaaaaay off.

#3. Try to average Two Shooting Matches a month: Another lofty goal that fell prey to ammo shortage. I had shot a few matches before the dark times started, but nowhere the 24 I was hoping for. (I did still win STEELMAGEDDON 2020 even though that feels like it was 5 years ago instead of 11 months)

#4. Make More Time to Not Work:  This might have been the only resolution that was actually helped by COVID. Due to lockdowns and dining room closures here in Florida, I was able to work a lot less through the first half of the year, and some policy changes at work also related to COVID mean I work a lot fewer hours a week as well. Mind you I’ve done very little to capitalize on this new free time, but it still feels nice to have.

#5. Work on Fitness/Weight loss: I definitely haven’t taken this anywhere near as seriously as I should have. I did buy a bike this year, and have been riding it on my days off, but I’m yet to use it for my commute which was the original plan. I guess the good news is I don’t weigh any more now than I did at the start of 2020 so that’s something. [Editor’s Note: Doing better than most]

#6. Finish My Hurricane Prep: Well, apart from my stockpile of booze, this one is a fail as well. I have enough canned food for maybe 3 or 4 days, and a couple cases of bottled water. Even with the constant threat of lockdowns in 2020 and all the fear mongering about grocery stores running out of everything I never really made stocking up a priority.

#7. Keep a Journal: This is the only one I kept and honestly I’m really proud of myself for it. I have 102 pages documenting every day of 2020 (apart from June 29th, I didn’t write anything that day and I can’t remember it at all now). Some days I wrote a little, some days I wrote a lot, and I’m looking forward to rereading what’s in there years from now.

Conclusion

I didn’t stick to many of my 2020 resolutions. A couple of them were due to circumstances outside my control, some of them were down to my own lack of motivation. Hopefully I’ll have better luck this year with things outside of my control, and I’m going to focus a lot more this year. I want my post at the end of 2021 to be humble bragging about how great I did this year.
