Practical Rifle Competition, October 2018

I went back to the rifle competition this past weekend. I ought to get there more often, but life has a funny way of keeping our plans from ever going the way we intend. I’m not going to go over how the match works, you can read it here. I did get video this time, though! Having someone there who is also filming their performance keeps me from forgetting as easily.

As to how I performed: I didn’t get disqualified, and my rifle didn’t almost fall apart on me (this time). Anything beyond that is a bonus.

STAGE 1

Raw time: 25.74, +3.0 sec penalties

STAGE 2

Raw time: 24.14, +0.5 sec penalties

STAGE 3

Raw time: 36.35, +10.0 sec penalties

STAGE 4

Raw time: 30.88, +2.5 sec penalties

STAGE 5

Raw time: 36.12, +1.0 sec penalties

STAGE 6

Raw time: 28.78, +2.0 sec penalties

TOTAL SCORE

Raw time: 182.01, +19 sec penalties, total time: 201.01

I ended up being 1 of 5 in Limited division, and 1 of 7 overall. This is the second time I’ve ever won a division in a club-level match, and the first time I’ve won the whole thing. Yeah, there were only 7 people competing, but it means something to me!

I also got a bit of luck on my side. My friend who also attends this match semi-regularly is one of 2 guys who gave me much competition. He ran out of ammo on the last stage, amassing some penalties that bumped him from a very close 2nd to 3rd. 2nd place belongs to the same guy who almost beat me last time. My total time is 6.04 seconds faster, but my raw time is 6.46 seconds slower than his. Still running an iron-sighted AK, still has a serious limp, still actually shooting faster than me. I ended up shooting a bunch of make-up shots to minimize penalties, and this guy is the reason why.

Speaking of make-up shots, the expected round count is 75 rifle, 20 pistol. I actually shot 115 5.56 and 30 9mm. Granted the match director added an extra 6th stage, but I still shot about 1 extra shot per target, with both guns.

I was using this match as a shake-out for my gear for the Run ‘N Gun II next weekend.  All my stuff worked and nothing has shaken loose so far.  Come back in 2 weeks to get reports on how that little adventure turns out.  There will be something else in the mean time.

See you next Friday. -S_S

  1. Looks fun! I need to find some local matches around here to participate in. There are PRS light tactical events not too far, but I think I’d be better off finding some smaller ones first to shake off some rust. Good luck with the Run and Gun!

    1. I really think that everyone should do a little competition here and there. If for no other reason, to just get out and see how your shooting compares to other people and to see if you and your gear can hold up.
