Short post today, but an update on a topic I have been pretty hyped about: .30 Super Carry.
If you aren’t up-to-speed, here’s the rundown so far: .30 SC is a new cartridge from Vista Outdoors, the mega-corp that owns Smith & Wesson, Federal, and Speer. .30 SC is a .32-cal projectile utilizing modern powder and metallurgy, giving you can get the same kinetic energy as a 9mm (standardized in the 1910’s) from a lighter, lower-recoiling round. Since the bullets are narrower than 9mm’s .356″ projectile, you can also add about 20% capacity to any given firearm with the same magazine length.
Main drawbacks are: low number of commercially available guns, few factory ammo options available, gun store clerk unfamiliarity, and general uneasiness about being an early adopter.
Now, to the new stuff.
First off, Hornady is now offering Critical Defense in .30 Super Carry. This is notable because Hornady is not owned by Vista Outdoors. This means that Vista allowed Hornady access to the ammo specs, which means that Vista is more interested in getting the cartridge out in front of people than they are about being the sole-supplier. This willingness to share will be required for the cartridge to survive, and that is what I am looking for. Hornady has almost a cult following for gun owners in the know, myself included. Quite a few people are of the opinion that Hornady only puts out good stuff.
Secondly, SAAMI has published the specs of the .30 Super Carry. This means that it is now possible for more manufacturers to load the cartridge. More ammo on shelves will sell more guns, which will entice more ammo and gun makers to produce guns & ammo, which will entice more buyers, which will… you get the idea.
Ultimately, the buying public will determine if this cartridge is a good idea or not. I personally think it is, and I also have a very low opinion of ‘the general public’, so I may be salty if .30SC never takes off. I hope these two additions help sway said ‘general public’ to my way of thinking.
Don’t be close-minded, don’t be a Fudd, and we’ll see you next Tuesday.
